Fall means the end of many summer activities, such as boating and beaching, but the fall also means the return of football and sweater weather.

For those who are inclined, there is also the fall hunting season.

The Massachusetts fall hunting season began with the turn of the calendar page over the Labor Day weekend.

The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife says, "Early Canada goose hunting begins (began) on September 1, black bear hunting season opens statewide on September 7, while pheasant hunting season opens October 16."

MassWildlife says, "Archery deer and turkey hunting seasons begin on October 4 in Eastern Massachusetts and October 18 in the rest of the state."

Hunting on Sunday is not permitted in Massachusetts.

MassWildlife says, "Many public lands are open to hunting, including Wildlife Management Areas, most state parks, and many town-owned lands." The agency suggests you "research the property you plan to visit to learn if hunting is allowed."

MassWildlife says hunting accidents are "extremely rare," but suggests you consider wearing "blaze orange" to reduce the risk of "being mistaken for game animals during the hunting season."

Non-hunters such as hikers and others should wear a bright orange vest or hat if they plan to be in the woods during hunting season. MassWildlife says you should "avoid wearing any earth-toned or animal-colored clothing" while in the woods.

The agency suggests you keep your pets on a leash and visible while in the woods during hunting season.

"Place an orange vest or bandana on your pet to keep it visible," says MassWildlife.
