On Saturday, September 28th, the shores of Buzzards Bay turned bright yellow as over 3,000 rubber ducks made a splash in the annual Mass Audubon Duck Derby. With eager crowds lining the shore of Barney's Joy in Westport, anticipation built as the featherless flotilla was released following a thrilling 5-second countdown.

The tides and wind made it a wild race, but in just 3-5 short minutes, the finish line funneled the fastest quackers into the spotlight. Leading the charge was none other than Christine Munroe of Somerset, whose duck “Ella Munroe” paddled its way to victory, securing the coveted Grand Prize. Christine, who purchased four ducks, is now the proud owner of bragging rights, along with a $5,000 grand prize.

Trailing closely behind in second place was Betty Slade of Westport, with her duck “Kenan” making waves to clinch the runner-up spot. Betty’s strategy? She bought seven ducks, increasing her odds and proving that it sometimes pays to go big or go home.

However, the real star of the show might just be the Slacker Quacker award, given to the slowest duck in the race. This year, that dubious honor went to David Clark of Taunton and his sluggish duck “Large Marge.” Crawling to the finish line at its own leisurely pace, Large Marge made sure to savor every last moment of the race. For David, the laughs and memories are prize enough—though a little extra swag never hurts.

With a total of 3,007 ducks in the race, this year saw an increase over last year’s 2,972, and more than $20,000 was raised for Mass Audubon’s ecological and outreach projects. The final tally is expected to be released by the end of the week, but the success of the event is already clear.

Whether they zipped or lagged, every duck that raced helped contribute to a cause that benefits nature—and that’s worth quacking about.
