Many schools are back in session and Sippican Elementary School in Marion recently welcomed back its students with some help from local law enforcement.

As a new school year begins, safety is on the top of most parents' minds. Cue the Marion Police Department.

While this isn't a new initiative -- this is actually the third year students have been welcomed this way -- it is one that is taking center stage as schools across the country beef up security.

We reached out to the Marion Police Department to ask some important questions as students head back to school. We were curious if Sippican was taking more steps this year to keep students safe.

According to Lt. Jeff Habicht, the school does not have a dedicated school resource officer on premise but the possibility is being explored.

"We have a school liaison officer who is a direct contact for the school and is encouraged to stop into the school frequently," Habicht said.

The safety of students is not a quick fix, Habicht says.

"We have numerous meetings with school administrators throughout the year to work on keeping our school safe and implementing new policies and practices. This is an ongoing process."

Friendly and familiar faces make it easy for students to trust and communicate when safety is ever in question.

The officers who welcomed students back are Chief Nighelli, Lt. Habicht, Sgt. Day, Officer Tracy and the Marion Police Department's  Administrative Assistant Lauren Roberts.
