Man Charged for Driving on Drugs After Motorcyclist Killed
BRIDGEWATER — Police Chief Christopher Delmonte and Fire Chief Thomas Levy report that the Bridgewater Police and Fire Departments responded to a motor vehicle crash between a sedan and a motorcycle on Bedford Street (Route 18) Thursday morning that resulted in the death of the motorcyclist.
The driver of the sedan has been arrested and faces numerous charges.
At approximately 11:50 a.m. Thursday, police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the area of 350 Bedford Street. Upon arrival, rescuers found a Toyota sedan and motorcycle that had crashed. The motorcycle rider was found with serious, life-threatening injuries.
The motorcycle rider was transported via Bridgewater Fire ambulance to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim’s identity is not being released pending positive identification and notification of his next of kin.
The operator of the sedan, Anthony Hathaway, 29, of Whitman, remained at the scene. An investigation determined he was under the influence of drugs, and he was arrested. Hathaway has been charged with motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of drugs; OUI drugs; endangering a child while operating under the influence of drugs; negligent operation of a motor vehicle; and marked lanes violation.
The initial investigation indicates that the driver of the sedan was travelling northbound on Route 18, when he allegedly crossed the center line and drove into the southbound lane of traffic in order to pass the vehicle in front of him.
The motorcycle rider was travelling southbound when he was struck head-on by the sedan.
The crash is being investigated by the Bridgewater Police Department.
Hathaway was transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. He will likely be arraigned Friday in Brockton District Court.
