Make Sure You Have Proper House Numbers in Case of an Emergency

A house number seems like such a small thing. You might not have ever put that much thought into it beyond “does this go with the color of the front door or mailbox?” And yet, something so small can be so important when an emergency arises. It seems unrelated, but according to the Rochester Police Brotherhood, having a house number with proper visibility can mean the difference between life and death. The information was posted on the official Facebook page on Thursday, January 28.

“If we can’t find you, we can’t help you! Let’s talk about proper house numbers. Next time you drive to your house in the evening, act as if you’ve never been there before. Can you find the numbers? Would emergency personnel be able to get to you? Sometimes the only way we can respond to houses is because your neighbors have great numbers. Make sure they are large enough to see from a distance and on BOTH sides of your mailbox so they can be seen from any direction. It’s better to be prepared and not need it, than not be prepared and need it. Those few seconds of us trying to figure out which house is yours could be life or death.”

You do not need to be a Rochester resident to order a house number. However, you can only get them dropped off and installed if you are a Rochester resident.
