When he was making a list of his 2024 resolutions, 13-year-old JJ wrote that his number one goal was to be "adopted by a very nice family."

JJ is a student who is proud of his academic accomplishments. He won the James Beard culinary award earlier this year, was an honors student, and was named the most improved math student in his class.

"If I were ever in a family with a mom and a dad, I would want to cook with them," he said. "I really want a dad to play baseball with, a mom as a second parent, and maybe an older role model, like an older sister or brother, that I could learn from."

In talking with JJ, it’s apparent that he places the highest value on family. One of his dreams is to spend quality time with his family after school each night.

"I would just like to have dinner with my family. I know there's hope that someone is going to adopt me. I think I'm a pretty cool, likable kid," he said.

Who Can Adopt?

If you’re at least 18, have a stable source of income and have room in your heart, you may be a perfect match to adopt a waiting child.

Adoptive parents can be single, married or partnered; experienced or not; renters or homeowners; LGBTQ+ singles and couples.

As an adoptive parent, you won’t have to pay any fees. Adoption from foster care is completely free in Massachusetts.

Adopting a child from foster care includes training, interviews and home visits to determine if adoption is right for you. These steps will help match you with a child or sibling group that will be a good fit.

To learn more about adoption from foster care, call the Massachusetts Adoption Resource Exchange (MARE) at (617) 964-6273 or visit www.mareinc.org. Start the process today and give a waiting child a permanent place to call home.
