WPRI first reported this morning about two historic homes in Newport that were destroyed by fires last night.

At around 11:15 last night the homes at 18 and 20 Second Street caught fire. Both are on the National Register of Historic Places and were built in the early 1800s. All people who lived in the homes got out safely, but a family dog from 20 Second Street passed away. The residents of 20 Second Street are being assisted by The Red Cross and the residents of 18 Second Street are staying with family. A firefighter from the scene was treated for smoke inhalation and the cause of the fires are still unknown.
