New Bedford Police have taken custody of a gun that was found in a basement.

Police say a maintenance worker at 88 Ruth St. found the gun on Tuesday, and originally thought it was a BB gun.

However, after closer examination he observed a round in the chamber.

The weapon was then placed on a shelf and the man called police.

Police say the gun was determined to be a Jennings firearm .22LR caliber hand gun that was badly corroded.

In addition officers also found a magazine and seven rounds of .22LR ammunition.
