A piece of Dartmouth history is for sale right now, but the stunning waterfront views this property boasts are anything but old.

The home at 966 Smith Neck Road has been sitting by Apponagansett Bay since 1790. Over the years it has grown from a classic federal-style farmhouse to the 5,606-square-foot property it is today, but the history still seeps out everywhere you turn.

The house was originally built for the Howland family, prominent Quakers who were involved in both the whaling industry and cotton industry in the area and were essentially millionaires of the time.

It is hard to determine exactly which members of the Howland family may have called this 4-acre property (listed by Paul E. Grover and Matthew de Groot of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and Robert Paul Properties) home, however.

On an 1871 property map of Dartmouth, the house shows the name N. Howland, presumably Nathaniel Howland, one of the most prominent men of Dartmouth of his day. Yet Nathaniel Howland passed before this house was built, so it's hard to say if this was really the Howland family member calling Smith Neck Road home.

Though whoever called it home first, they had a stunning place to live.

The sweeping farmland offers plenty of private gardens and walking paths, a personal apple orchard plus beachfront and a deep-water dock. You can sit on your covered porch and watch the sunset on the boats floating in the bay, then head to Padanaram Village for dinner and drinks.

It is perhaps quintessential coastal New England living and it could be yours for a mere $6.95 million.

It's certainly much more than the original owners would have spent on it, but it's not too hard to imagine how those original owners lived.
