The house was originally built for the Howland family, prominent Quakers who were involved in both the whaling industry and cotton industry in the area and were essentially millionaires of the time.

It is hard to determine exactly which members of the Howland family may have called this 4-acre property (listed by Paul E. Grover and Matthew de Groot of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices and Robert Paul Properties) home, however.

On an 1871 property map of Dartmouth, the house shows the name N. Howland, presumably Nathaniel Howland, one of the most prominent men of Dartmouth of his day. Yet Nathaniel Howland passed before this house was built, so it's hard to say if this was really the Howland family member calling Smith Neck Road home.

Though whoever called it home first, they had a stunning place to live.
