The coronavirus pandemic has proved hard on everyone, and if the last year has made it difficult for you or your family to afford nutritious meals, there are a few opportunities to get assistance this month right here on the SouthCoast.

The Massachusetts Military Support Foundation is teaming up with the USDA's Farmers to Families program, hosting dozens of free food distribution events throughout the Bay State this month and into May in support of the fight against food insecurity.

Food boxes will each contain 32 pounds of both perishable and nonperishable food items, including fresh fruits and veggies along with dairy and meat products.

Here on the SouthCoast, military and veteran families, along with members of the general public, can pick up the food boxes at any of the following events.

  • Wareham:
    • April 14 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Southcoast Health's Rosebrook Facility (100 Rosebrook Way in Wareham)
  • New Bedford:
    • April 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the New Bedford Distribution Center (1331 Cove Road in New Bedford)
    • April 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the New Bedford Distribution Center (1331 Cove Road in New Bedford)
    • May 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the New Bedford Distribution Center (1331 Cove Road in New Bedford)
  • Bourne:

    • April 26 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Bourne High School (75 Waterhouse Road in Bourne)

    • May 1 from 9 to 11 a.m. at Plymouth North High School (41 Obery Street in Plymouth)

If you're unable to make these events across the SouthCoast, there are plenty of other distribution events through the Massachusetts Military Support Foundation; They'll just be a bit farther of drive to get to. Check out the full list of food giveaway events on the MMSF website.

All events will follow COVID-19 guidelines, with limited interaction for pick-up.

The foundation has also put together a recipe book inspired by ingredients you'll find inside the USDA food boxes. From overnight oats and chicken fried rice to pasta e fagioli soup and cinnamon roasted carrots, there's a recipe for everyone.
