Fort Taber in New Bedford Vandalized for Second Summer in a Row

It has happened again. Fort Taber has been vandalized. The New Bedford attraction experienced a similar act of vandalism last summer, however this summer's version seems to be a little more substantial.

When Did the Vandalism Happen

The timing is hard to pin down, but Mary Jane Cayer talked to Fun 107 and guesses that the damage was done sometime on July 20th.

"I first saw the damage early Tuesday morning. The damage was quite fresh so my guess it occurred sometime on Monday. I walk my dog there daily in the early morning."

What Happened to the Lawn at Fort Taber

The lawn at Fort Taber/Fort Rodman was marked by someone doing donuts, sending the dirt and turf flying from what was a serene lawn overlooking the ocean. The marked up grass would be a shame no matter where it happened, but the disrespect to the historical site stings even more.

How Are New Bedford Residents Reacting

"How did I feel when I first saw the damage? I felt very sad at the desecration of an iconic historical site that should be honored and not disrespected. Soldiers and past veterans have stood on that exact spot in defense of the City of New Bedford and our country. Unfortunately, this is the tribute they received. Hopefully our City can correct this injustice and stop any further damage to our Fort and surrounding historical sites."

Plans to have the New Bedford Department of Public Infrastructure  loam and reseed the are are already underway.
