Rhode Island's newest professional sports team is bringing back more than just soccer this summer.

The Rhode Island Football Club (RIFC), which calls Pawtucket it's home, recently announced their "Summer of Soccer." The team has eight home games scheduled between now and Labor Day weekend and they are packing them with theme nights, food specials and fireworks.

Yes, for the first time in years, post-game fireworks displays will be back in Pawtucket.

For decades summer in Pawtucket was marked by post-game fireworks at McCoy Stadium. Growing up in the city, I can personally remember many 4th of July celebrations in the streets around the ballpark, eyes on the skies for the illuminating show.

But it has now been six years since fireworks were last set off after a Pawtucket Red Sox game at McCoy Stadium and two years since the city's "McCoy's Final Inning" celebration.

The fireworks drought in nearly over however thanks to the city's new soccer team.

As part of the "Summer of Soccer", RIFC have three separate fireworks nights planned over the next few months including a patriotic display after their home game on July 5th.

The first of these fireworks nights will be this Saturday, June 21, after RIFC take on Sacramento Republic FC at Centerville Bank Stadium. The game starts at 7 P.M. with fireworks immediately after.

The display after the July 5th game will celebrate the 4th of July as well as the 50th anniversary of Cape Verdean independence.

August 9th fireworks show will be part of "Folklore Night" and will be set entirely to Taylor Swift music.
