Exploring the Spine-Tingling Fears of People on the SouthCoast
What are you most afraid of? I’ll go first.
A few years ago, my family took a trip to California. My step-father and I decided to head to the pier in Santa Monica for a day of jet skiing. I had never been before and I had always wanted to try it.
The majority of the day was a blast. We were flying over the Pacific Ocean on our jet skis without a care in the world, but there was one tiny problem that was gnawing at me.
I knew that if I fell into the water, I would freak out.
I have a fear of open water, especially when I can’t touch the bottom, and at that moment, we were as far into the ocean as you could go.
At one point, I put my jet ski into high gear, and as I hit top speed, I hit a wave that sent me flying off the jet ski and into the Pacific.
Panic quickly set in as I flailed helplessly in the ocean.
My step-father, however, found it hilarious.
I managed to get myself back onto the jet ski, but not before my brain spiraled with scary thoughts of what was lurking underneath the water’s surface.
That day was the day my fear of open water was solidified.
Fears come in many forms. I certainly have a few, and it turns out, I’m not alone.
