If you’ve lived on the SouthCoast long enough, you know we take serious pride in two things: our Portuguese food and our legendary chow mein noodles made right here in Fall River. So when word started spreading about a dish that combines both into one creation, I had to check it out.

Turns out, this might actually be one of the most SouthCoast dish collaborations ever.

I called over to Avo’s Feast in Fall River to get the scoop, and sure enough, the Portuguese Steak Chow Mein is not a limited experiment. It’s officially on the menu for the foreseeable future, and judging by the early reaction, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Where the Idea for Portuguese Steak Chow Mein Came From

According to Addy, an employee from Avo’s Feast, the idea came from owner Michael Ferreira, who wanted something that truly represents the SouthCoast on a plate – or in a sandwich.

Honestly? Mission accomplished.

You’ve got chow mein noodles sourced directly from Fall River’s own Oriental Chow Mein Company, paired with Portuguese steak flavors, that signature red pepper, a fried egg, and the option to serve it either plated or stuffed into a fresh Portuguese papo seco roll.

That’s basically a culinary love letter to this region.

Plate or Sandwich — You Choose

Here’s where it gets even better.

You can order it as:

  1. A full plate loaded with chow mein, steak, egg, peppers, and sauce
  2. A sandwich version served on a fresh Portuguese roll

People aren’t just trying it. They’re doubling down. Addy told me customers are already asking for extra sauce and extras across the board, which is usually a pretty strong sign you’ve got a hit.

The Price Might Surprise You

Given how stacked this dish sounds, the price is honestly refreshing:

  • Sandwich: $8.99
  • Plate: $11.99

In today’s food world, that’s actually a solid deal.

A Dish That Feels Very “Us”

This is one of those creations that probably only makes perfect sense here. The SouthCoast has always been a cultural crossroads: Portuguese heritage, New England seafood traditions, and that unmistakable Fall River chow mein culture all blending together.

So maybe it’s not strange at all. Maybe it was inevitable.
