FALL RIVER - The Fall River police officer that shot and killed a New Bedford man late Sunday night has been placed on administrative duty.

The Herald News reports that the unnamed officer is now performing strictly administrative functions as the investigation into the police-involved shooting is ongoing.

Late Sunday night, a lone officer responded to a possible disturbance involving several cars and what a caller reported as possible gunshots in the area of Airport and Riggenbach Roads.

The Fall River Police Department says as the officer arrived on the scene, multiple cars tried to leave the area. The officer reportedly attempted to prevent one of the vehicles from leaving, and ultimately fired several shots into the car, fatally wounding the driver, Larry Ruiz-Barreto, 19, of New Bedford.

The fatal shooting is under investigation by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
