Fall River Serial Abuser Sentenced for Violent Attack on His Father

FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A Fall River man with a long history of assault was sentenced to serve eight years in state prison this week for violently attacking his 68-year-old father.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, Nathan Norwood, 42, pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court Wednesday to indictments charging him with assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, and assault and battery on a person over the age of 60 with serious bodily injury.

The charges stem from a March 23, 2023 incident in which the father confronted Norwood about his illicit drug use in the house. According to the D.A.’s Office, Norwood immediately attacked his father, striking him in the face multiple times and strangling him to the point of near-unconsciousness.

The father sustained multiple fractures to his face as a result.

Norwood has a 23-page criminal record, including stints in county jail as well as state prison, including one for drunkenly breaking into his girlfriend’s house and threatening her with a knife.

He has also had 11 restraining orders filed against him by eight separate victims, the D.A.’s Office said.

“The defendant is a career criminal who egregiously assaulted his own father, causing serious injury. This all occurred because he was using drugs, and his father understandably objected to that,” District Attorney Tom Quinn said. “This is outrageous and uncivilized behavior that required serious punishment.”
