Fall River Bakery Closed Down for Easter Season
For the first time in decades, some Fall River families won't be celebrating Easter with sweet bread on the table from Lou's Bakery.
When you run a bakery in Fall River, your biggest business days of the year revolve around holidays. As a bakery, not only is it important to be on your "A game" for sales during the holidays – because they are your biggest money-making weekends – but it’s also crucial to be front and center on those holiday tables.
Just as important as selling their products, Fall River bakeries need to be a staple on holiday tables so they become ingrained in family traditions. Families that are Barcello’s families tend to remain Barcello’s families. Families that are Leddy’s families tend to remain Leddy’s families.

It’s similar to when Coke, Pepsi and Lay’s Chips put their products on sale the week before major holidays. They want those Thanksgiving pictures with relatives to have a Coke bottle on the table ingrained in the culture.
That’s why it must have been so difficult for Lou’s Bakery in Fall River to put out this statement over the weekend on its Facebook page. The statement seemingly responded to growing curiosity about when they would return from their "temporary closure."
We regret to inform you that our business Will Be Closed for this upcoming Easter Holiday Season. This was a difficult decision for us to make, as we continue to recover from ongoing challenges. The Easter Holiday and symbolism of sweetbread is not only a significant time for our business, but it also holds deep meaning as a cherished family tradition within our community. This makes the decision all the more challenging for us. Your understanding and continued support mean everything to us, and we’re eager to welcome you back as soon as we reopen soon. Until then, we wish you a blessed and joyful Easter filled with peace, hope, and happiness. — Lou's Bakery
Lou's first announced its temporary closure the day after Thanksgiving. The plan was to close on Christmas Day and remain closed until April 1. The bakery has never had a closure like this before, and its November announcement stated that it was for something "prearranged."
Unfortunately for Lou’s Bakery fans, that temporary closure will now extend until at least Easter Sunday. Unless you had the foresight to buy and freeze some of Lou's wildly popular Portuguese sweet bread, you’ll have to find it at a different bakery this year.
Carl Parent, a railroad conductor from Fall River, lamented on Lou's Facebook page, "Wow, this will be the first time since I was a kid not having you guys’ sweet bread for Easter!"
Lou’s Bakery has been a part of Fall River holidays for over 40 years, and we’re hoping it will be pumping out that sweet bread on East Main Street for 40 more!
