Fall River’s Liberal Club Closing Its Kitchen After 50 Years
For more than five decades, the Liberal Club Restaurant has been a go-to spot in Fall River, a place where families gathered, friends caught up, and regulars always knew they’d see a familiar face. Known for its comforting dishes, from fish and chips to authentic Portuguese favorites, the restaurant built a reputation as one of the city’s most dependable and welcoming dining experiences.
Now, after 50-plus years of service, that chapter is coming to a close. The restaurant will officially shut down its kitchen on June 30, marking the end of an era for generations of Fall River residents who grew up with it as part of their mid-week or weekend routine.
The Liberal Club itself, however, is not going anywhere. Founded in 1915, the club has long been a cornerstone of the community, evolving over time into one of the city’s most recognizable social hubs. While the restaurant inside it is closing, the club remains active and already has plans for what comes next.

Not the End, Just a New Chapter
In a message shared with the community, the restaurant’s owners reflected on the decades of memories created within its walls.

“As we close this chapter on June 30th, we do so with full hearts and immense gratitude,” the club posted. “There are so many memories, busy Friday nights, familiar faces walking through the door, conversations that picked up right where they left off, and the simple joy of sharing a meal together.”
What Happens to the Space Next?
Meanwhile, the Liberal Club confirmed it is actively looking for a new business to take over the restaurant space, with plans to continue offering a dining experience in the future.
“This is not the end, it is a transition into a new chapter,” the club shared.
Until then, there’s still time to grab one more order of fish and chips, relive some memories, and say goodbye to a place that has meant so much to so many. The restaurant will remain open through June 30.
