Fall River Father in Desperate Need of a Kidney
For Joao “John” Macaroco of Fall River, life took an unexpected and devastating turn last summer.
What started as unexplained vomiting quickly spiraled into a dire medical crisis. By late July of last year, John was admitted to Rhode Island Hospital, undergoing multiple biopsies in search of answers. The diagnosis: anca vasculitis glomerulonephritis, an aggressive autoimmune disease that has nearly shut down his kidneys.
Now, with kidney function below five percent, his life depends on finding a living donor – fast.
At just 35 years old, John is exhausted from the grueling battle, but his spirit remains unbroken. His five-year-old son Wesley is his greatest motivation, fueling his determination to push through the hardest days.
Three times a week, John undergoes dialysis at the Fall River Kidney Center, a process that drains his energy and leaves him feeling powerless. The emotional toll is just as heavy; he wrestles with guilt over the idea that someone else would have to sacrifice a kidney for him.
His wife Kelsey has been John’s rock through it all, documenting his journey with heartbreaking honesty. In a recent update, she shared an urgent plea:
"John needs a kidney transplant ASAP, so we are coming to Facebook to find him a perfect O Positive match," she posted. "This is the hardest part for him, as he feels guilt that someone will sacrifice for him. At the end of the day, there’s no other option; we need him to get better."
Kelsey also reassured potential donors that the process is not without safeguards.
Massachusetts General Hospital has confirmed that if a donor ever needs a kidney in the future, they will go straight to the top of the transplant list and receive the best match available. Medical expenses are covered by insurance, and donors who work may qualify for FMLA benefits.
As the weeks turn into months, the Macaroco family is holding onto hope, leaning on their community for strength. Through every setback – hospital stays, central lines, blood transfusions – they remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support.
Time is not on their side. John needs a donor soon.

Those who are O Positive and willing to consider saving his life can start the process with a simple five-minute application and a 15-minute phone call. The requirements include being at least 18 years old, a non-smoker, in good health and free from significant medical conditions.
For John, for Wesley, and for a family clinging to hope, every share, every conversation, and every potential donor could make all the difference. If you or someone you know can help, please consider stepping forward.
