When Cabral struck the officer, he had only been days removed from being released on bail after he allegedly was involved in an incident that led to an Amber Alert, when it was believed a six-month-old child and its mother had been abducted in Dartmouth.

In that incident, he faced charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and larceny under $1,200 after he allegedly brandished a knife and stole the cell phone of a man who was in an apartment with the child and its mother, and then forced the mother and child into his car, which led to the mistaken Amber Alert.

As it turned out, the child was Cabral’s, and the mother said she got into the vehicle with him willingly.
