When Former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia Gets to Leave Jail
Corrupt former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia didn't get the answer he hoped for when he asked U.S. District Court Judge Allison Burroughs to spring him from the clink early.
Providence's WPRI-TV 12 reported Judge Burroughs said the 32-year-old Correia failed to show "extraordinary and compelling reasons" why he should be allowed to go home without completing his sentence.
Correia, born in Fall River on December 11, 1991, was convicted three years ago in a public corruption and fraud case that netted him six years in jail. In rejecting the bid for early release, WPRI says Burroughs noted Correia's sentence was already a "significant departure from the advisory guideline range."
Ciorreia could have faced between 13 and 15 years.
In her decision to keep Correia under lock and key, Judge Burroughs reportedly wrote, "His crime was serious and warrants the arguably and already generous sentence imposed."
WBSM News reported Correia has been moved from one prison to another since his conviction. He is currently being held at a federal prison in Ashland, Kentucky.
Correia served four years as Fall River's 44th mayor from 2016 to 2020 after serving one term on the Fall River City Council. At 23, Correia was the youngest person ever elected Mayor of Fall River.

Now that it appears Correia will serve his full prison term, when might we expect to see him back in "The Riv?" If he keeps his nose clean, with accrued "good behavior" time, Correia might be seen making his way back over the Braga Bridge as soon as July of 2026.
