UPDATE: The Bristol County District Attorney's Office announced on Sunday afternoon that Alvarado is now facing an upgraded charge of murder in the killing of Bump.

FALL RIVER (WBSM) — Fall River Police are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred in the city Friday night.

According to police and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, officers responded to a rooming house at 234 Tripp Street at 9:46 p.m. on March 15 for reports that a person in that residence had been stabbed during an altercation with another resident.

Officers arrived to find a 44-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was transported to St. Anne’s Hospital where he was pronounced deceased from his injuries just prior to 10:30 p.m.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office identified the victim as Joseph Bump.

Pedro Fernando Orellano Alvarado, 42, was arrested on scene and is currently charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He is being held in jail over the weekend and will be arraigned in Fall River District Court on Monday.

The D.A.’s Office said both the defendant and the victim were residents of the rooming house.

The investigation remains ongoing by Fall River Police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office.
