Fall River Is Losing This U-Turn Permanently Starting Thursday
FALL RIVER (WBSM) — If you got used to using this Fall River U-turn during your daily travels, we’ve got some bad news for you.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has announced the permanent closure of the Cory Street U-turn on Route 79 on Thursday, December 5.
It’s part of the next step in the Route 79-Davol Street Corridor improvement plan.
The Cory Street U-Turn Was Only Temporary
The temporary U-turn is being closed so that MassDOT can begin construction on the permanent Davol Street northbound and Brightman Street intersection.
That means there will be new detours in place beginning Thursday.
When Will Work Take Place and How Long Will It Take?
Starting December 5, the road construction will take place during daytime hours, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. The new detours will be in place 24 hours a day from December 5, 2024 until April 2025. All work is subject to weather conditions.
What Are the New Detours?
According to MassDOT, vehicles seeking to cross the temporary Cory St U-turn should use the following detour:
Davol Street northbound to Davol Street southbound
- Continue on Davol Street northbound and Route 79 northbound for approximately 1 mile
- Take the North Main Street/N Fall River Exit
- Take a left onto North Main Street and continue north for approximately 0.2 miles
- Take a right onto the Route 79 South on-ramp to Newport/Providence RI
- Continue on Route 79 southbound and Davol Street southbound for approximately 1.2 miles
- Continue to your destination
Davol Street southbound to Davol Street northbound
- Proceed south on Davol Street
- Turn left onto President Avenue
- Turn left again onto Davol Street northbound
- Continue to your destination
Why Is Route 79 in Fall River Being Redesigned?
According to MassDOT, the mile-long corridor is being redesigned “to improve mobility, connectivity, and safety along and across Route 79 and Davol Street,” including bicycle access.
“The corridor will be transformed into a multi-modal urban boulevard, connecting the neighborhoods to the Taunton River while promoting economic growth by creating new development parcels to contribute to economic development,” MassDOT said.
