Famous Churrascaria Portuguese BBQ & Family Restaurant in Fall River may have to close its doors now that Luis Teixeira has sold the restaurant and the building, but his hope is that someone will pick up where he left off, so that his loyal customers can continue to enjoy his popular Portuguese cuisine.

Teixeira has been in the food business for 30 years. At first, it was a coffee truck, then it was a pizza place, and for the past three years, it’s been the churrascaria.

“I couldn’t keep up with Domino’s,” joked Teixeira, so he relied on his Portuguese heritage for a fresh start.

“I’m Portuguese and I grew up in New Bedford. I was a big customer of Nova Mundo, and for me, I always crave that kind of food,” he said. It only made sense to change the pizza joint into a Portuguese restaurant.

Teixeira’s favorite part about the restaurant industry is satisfying the customers.

“They are coming to you for a reason,” he said. “There’s a lot of choices out there, so when they return to you, that’s a good feeling.”

That’s why Teixeira is so torn about the next chapter in his life. The restaurant business is a demanding one, constantly pulling you away from weekends and holidays, and with a wife and 14-year-old son at home, Teixeira felt it was time to dedicate more time to the family.

“I felt bad,” he said. “My customers enjoy our food; it was their comfort food.”

Teixeira is a family man at heart, but his loyal customers hold a special place as well, and his hope is for a local restaurant in Fall River to take on his restaurant so it can continue to bring joy to the people in the area.

“I had an offer on the building and I couldn’t say no,” Teixeira said. "But the new owner does not want to take over the existing establishment. I am trying to put a package together for someone to take the business name, the menu, the social media, everything.”

Teixeira said he would even train the new owner, just to keep the restaurant alive and well.

For the past 15 years, Teixeira has owned the building on 144 Rodman Street and operated the restaurant. He hopes to keep the restaurant alive and well by passing the torch to a new owner that will give customers as much dedication as he did.
