FAIRHAVEN — After announcing just last month that the Fairhaven Police Department would be getting a K-9 unit, it's official: a puppy has been chosen, and according to a Facebook announcement, it's a boy!

The department posted photos of the newly chosen pup to its Facebook page on Thursday morning.

"Here is a sneak peek of our boy," the post read.

But according to the post, the doggo still needs a name.

Last week police asked for the public's input on finding the perfect moniker for the new four-legged officer, who is a black Labrador Retriever.

In the post, police stated there were over 1,000 name submissions.

The department has narrowed it down to two of the most popular choices: Blue, after the Fairhaven Blue Devils (the high school mascot), or Phoenix, after Fort Phoenix, the Revolutionary War-era fort built to protect the entire area.

Residents are asked to comment their favorite of the two names up until Friday at 6 p.m.

The dog was chosen with the help of the Bristol County Sheriff's Office and Maranatha Kennels.

He will be partnered with Fairhaven Police Officer Jillian Jodoin and will help find missing people, track suspects, and detect drugs like heroin and fentanyl, among other duties.

The new K-9 will also offer comfort to both officers and citizens after traumatic incidents.

Starting Sept. 27, he will be sent on a vigorous ten-week training program with Jodoin at the Bristol County Sheriff's Office.
