Spring is the perfect time to enjoy fresh flowers, being outside and protecting our planet.
Earth Day, celebrated on April 22, is a day dedicated to supporting and protecting our environment. To celebrate, many cities and towns do their part by holding a variety of events.
Here are five events happening on the SouthCoast that you can take part in this year.

New Bedford Recycling Earth Day Cleanup
Saturday, April 18
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Parking lot behind Cotali Mar Restaurant (Beetle St. New Bedford)
- Free t-shirt for all participants
- Walk-ins welcome
- Gloves and tools provided
- Please wear closed-toe shoes

Volunteer Opportunities Across the SouthCoast
Slocum’s River Reserve Work Party
Tuesday, April 21
9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Slocum’s River Reserve
320 Horseneck Rd Dartmouth, MA
- Volunteers will assist in making some infrastructural improvements, clearing invasives, and adding woodchips to the paths
- Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants
- Coffee, snacks, and tools will be available
Family-Friendly Earth Day Activities
Tiverton Library STEM Workshop
Wednesday, April 22
10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m.
34 Roosevelt Ave, Tiverton, RI
Join the library for a fun day of learning in the Children’s Activity Room. Attendees will watch Puffling Patrol, a movie about a community in Iceland who works to save baby puffins. Visitors will then make bird-shaped window clings and learn about local birds.

Earth Day at Pine Meadow Alpacas
Wednesday, April 22
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
109 Marion Rd. Mattapoisett, MA
- Kids will have the opportunity to help plant a garden, take home their own flower and meet the barnyard animals
- $15 per child; $5 per non-planter
- All proceeds go directly to caring for the animals
Evening Cleanup Events
Onset Bay Beach Cleanup
Thursday, April 23
5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.
Onset Bay Center flagpole next to Onset Pier
- All equipment, including gloves and bags, will be provided
- Pre-registration is requested
- To register, visit savebuzzardsbay.org
- The event will conclude with pizza from 6:15 p.m. to 7 p.m.
