DARTMOUTH — The fugitive who led state police on a chase from Westport into Connecticut on Wednesday has been identified as 36-year-old Dartmouth resident Ian Grant.

State police said Grant was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant on assault and witness intimidation charges, and fled from troopers after driving his pickup truck at them.

At around 5:45 a.m., Grant's 111 Prospect St. home went up in flames. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although Dartmouth Fire District 1 Chief Peter Andrade said that it is believed to be suspicious.

New Bedford police tried to stop Grant in his white Toyota Tacoma shortly after 11 a.m., according to state police, but he fled and headed west on I-195.

Three state troopers who were monitoring the chase set up a tire deflation device on I-195 in Westport just west of Route 88.

According to state police, at around 11:19 a.m., Grant drove into the median at the troopers, causing at least one trooper to fire their duty weapon.

The troopers involved were later evaluated for stress at a local hospital and have since been released.

The white pickup kept going and struck two state police cruisers before crossing over the median and continuing to flee west on the eastbound side of I-195 into oncoming traffic.

Troopers did not pursue Grant out of safety concerns, instead issuing an alert for the white Tacoma.

A state police Air Wing helicopter searched the area for the suspect along with patrols and K9 units.

Police in Jamestown, Rhode Island found the pickup truck shortly thereafter and began a chase on Route 1 into Charlestown, RI and towards Westerly.

After traveling on Route 78 into Connecticut, pursuing cruisers were able to stop Grant on Route 2 in North Stonington, CT, where his truck went off the road.

He was taken into custody by a tactical team following a short standoff at around 2 p.m.

Massachusetts state police helicopters provided aerial support during the pursuit and the arrest.

State police said investigators are processing the scene in Westport where Grant allegedly drove at the troopers.

Details on criminal charges and Grant's return to Massachusetts are still pending, and state police said the troopers' firearms discharge will be investigated, per policy.
