Dartmouth Mall Olympia Sports Closing Along With the Rest of the Chain
Olympia Sports is going out of business. That means all of the company's retail locations, including the store in the Dartmouth Mall, will close.
I spoke with a management official at the Dartmouth location, not authorized to speak on behalf of the company, who told me managers were notified of the closing on Monday. A liquidation sale began on Thursday.
I am told the Dartmouth Mall store will close within a couple of months or whenever "everything is gone, including the fixtures."
After Maine-based Olympia sold its 151 stores to Colorado-based JackRabbit in 2019, the new owners decided to shed 76 stores several months before the start of the COVID pandemic.
Schottenstein Stores purchased the stores from JakcRabbit in May 2022 and began liquidating the unprofitable ones.
My source tells me the remaining stores were denied credit by their vendors, such as 24/7, which markets popular sports jerseys and other items. Only Champion would extend credit. As a result, many of the chain's stores, including the one in Dartmouth, have been unable to stock items with New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, and other regional sports team logos.
The Dartmouth Mall Olympia Sports is the last in the immediate SouthCoast area to close. Stores in Swansea, Taunton, and Fairhaven have long since locked their doors. Wareham recently closed as well.
All remaining Olympia Sports stores are currently offering 10 percent to 30 percent off, but the discount will increase each week until everything is gone.
Olympia Sports was founded in 1975 in Portland, Maine. All of the remaining stores are located in the Northeast with the flagship store located in Boston.
