Growing up by the ocean, water was always part of life for me. Beaches, pools, summers with friends – and of course, swim lessons. At the time, it felt like just another childhood activity, but looking back, those lessons stuck with me and gave me confidence in the water.

Fast forward to now and life has come full circle. I’m officially in dad mode with a nine-month-old son who already treats bath time like his own personal water park. Naturally, I’m thinking ahead about swim lessons for him someday.

That’s why the news of a new swim school opening in Dartmouth caught my attention in a big way. Big Blue Swim School is preparing to open right off Route 6 behind Caliente Mexican Grill, bringing a family-focused swim school concept to the SouthCoast.

A Swim School Built Just for Kids

Owned by Melissa and Gary Schorr, the Dartmouth location is part of a growing national brand, with other Massachusetts schools in Cotuit and Framingham. Melissa said the mission is simple but meaningful.

“Swimming is such an important life skill, especially here in Massachusetts where we’re surrounded by beaches, lakes and pools," she said. "We wanted to bring something dedicated just to teaching kids how to be safe and confident in the water.”

Unlike multi-purpose pools, Big Blue is designed specifically for children ages three months through 12 years old. The water stays around 90 degrees – closer to bath temperature – making it comfortable for babies, toddlers and parents who join them in the water.

Convenience for Busy Families

Another big focus is making lessons easier for parents juggling multiple kids and busy schedules.

“Families can bring siblings at the same time and each child gets placed in the right skill level,” Melissa explained. “It makes it simpler instead of running to different lessons all week.”

Small class sizes and trained instructors aim to help kids progress safely while building confidence, something Schorr said creates lasting memories beyond just swimming ability.

Their motto reflects that bigger picture: "Life’s big moments start here."

From Personal Experience to Passion

Melissa said part of the inspiration came from a scary parenting moment when one of their own kids briefly slipped underwater.

“There’s nothing scarier than that as a parent. It really reinforced how important swim skills are and why we feel so passionate about helping families prevent those situations," she said.

As someone who still benefits from childhood swim lessons – and even takes part in local open-water swims like the Buzzards Bay Swim – that message definitely resonates.

Also, knowing they start as young as three months? Let’s just say my son might be signing up sooner rather than later.

Grand Opening and Family Fun Day Details

Big Blue Swim School plans to officially open Monday, March 16.

Before that, families can check out the facility during a Family Fun Day on Saturday, March 14 from noon to 3 p.m. with music, giveaways, cotton candy and a chance to tour the new space (no swimming that day).

They’re also offering a limited “First Dip Deal” with introductory discounts for families who want to try lessons when they open.

For parents across Dartmouth, New Bedford and the entire SouthCoast, this new swim school could be a welcome addition. It may even be the start of lifelong water confidence for the next generation.
