Walter Palmer is currently wanted for his connection with the death of Cecil, a thirteen-year-old lion which the dentist hunted for sport. The lion was being tracked with a GPS collar by a wildlife team from Oxford University who later were able to locate the body of the deceased animal. However, Palmer was nowhere to be found.

Though he claims that he did not realize the significance Cecil had on the community at large, and that he regretted his actions, the long time hunter is no stranger to killing wild animals for sport including rhinos, deer, rams, leopards, and more.

Reportedly Palmer paid upward of $50,000 to participate in this hunt which consisted of baiting the creature from the protected lands which it originally resided on, and bringing it to unprotected territory so as to kill it under "legal" terms.

According to police officials in Zimbabwe the two men that assisted in the hunt have already been arrested and they are now searching for Palmer who has since gone into hiding.

What makes this ordeal so chilling was the strenuous hours that Cecil was wounded for before finally being killed by gunshot. Only after the fact did the men see the GPS tracking collar and attempted to destroy it but failed.

With lion populations having been depleted to near 60% less in the past three decades and with only around 30,000 lions left in the wild, it has become a very real concern to try and save these animals from extinction by human hands.
