Boston Welcoming Pee-wee Herman for ‘Big Adventure’ Screening
When it comes to defining movies of my childhood, Pee-wee's Big Adventure is right up there with Ferris Bueller's Day Off. While my adult life probably has more leftover Ferris in it than Pee-wee, that's probably only because I can't get away with screaming really loud in the Fun 107 offices every time I hear today's secret word.
For me, Pee-wee's Big Adventure is one of those movies that I could probably act out and recite virtually any line from any role. The movie has an infinite amount of quotable lines and references. There is definitely a cult following for the movie that runs deep.
As much of a superfan as I am for Pee-wee's Big Adventure, I know that I'm an amateur when it comes to Pee-wee fandom. Tim Burton's rookie film has many layers to it. This is why this upcoming Boston event is so incredible.
Imagine watching a screening of Pee-wee's Big Adventure. As many times as I've seen the movie, I've only ever seen it on a television screen. After the movie is over, Paul Reubens, a.k.a. Pee-wee Herman, will conduct a question-and-answer period and will share behind the scenes stories about the making of Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
Take, for example, this anecdote from Rolling Stone, in which Pee-wee admitted that he scrapped the entire idea for a movie during a lunch with Phil Hartman.
“Every day, me, [Pee-wee’s Big Adventure writer] Phil Hartman and a producer would take a lunch break and walk to the commissary. As we would walk by, every single person was on a bike and every day, I’d be like, ‘I gotta get a bike.’ One day I came back from lunch and they had bought me a restored Schwinn racer and it was chained up to a post that had a little character of me that said ‘Pee-wee Herman bike parking only.’ And I looked at it and said, ‘I’m writing the wrong movie. We’re doing the wrong thing.'” --Pee Wee Herman, Rolling Stone Magazine
