Boston’s South End is Latest Location For New Season of HBO’s ‘Julia’

If you have not yet binge-watched HBO's docuseries Julia about the life of celebrity chef Julia Child, then do yourself a favor this weekend. The show is an absolute delight and is full of locations many Massachusetts residents will recognize.

The legendary Julia Child may have been born in California and studied culinary arts at the famous Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, but it was Cambridge, Massachusetts, that she called home for 40 years and where she filmed her famous cooking shows for PBS.

It's the time she spent in and around Boston that is the focus of HBO Max's Julia, a fantastic new series that debuted earlier this year and has already been renewed for a second season.

OnlyInBos shared a letter sent to residents of the neighborhood where filming will take place. It let folks know when the crews were coming, how long they would be prepping the film site, how long they would actually be filming and even how long the wrap-up would take when it was all over.

So convenient.

Yet, it still begs questions. Where in the South End? And why?

I have a theory about those two.

Back when Child actually lived in Cambridge and dined throughout Boston, one of her favorite restaurants was Maison Robert, a French restaurant that once occupied the first floor of Old City Hall on School Street in Boston.

Though Maison Robert has been closed since chef Lucien Robert retired back in 2003, Robert's nephew has since opened Petit Robert in the South End, which may be where film crews are headed.

Of course, it could just be that the brick houses of the South End look a lot like 1970s brick houses in Cambridge and the filming will be for scenes of Julia Child's home.

Whatever they are doing inside won't be revealed to show fans until the new season hits HBO Max in 2023, but you can sneak a peak at film crews hard at work next Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 28, 29 and 30. Plus, the actors will be on hand Thursday, Sept. 29.
