When the weather dictates that the beach and area parks are no longer an option for entertaining the kids on the weekend and during school break, it's time for alternatives.

During a time when a trip to the burger joint and a movie for a family of four costs nearly as much as your monthly mortgage payment, your options are even more limited than ever.

Occasionally, we remind you about the SAILS Library Network's reduced-price or free admission program for area museums and other attractions. It is a bona fide way to save money and provide worthwhile entertainment and education to the kids.

Almost all of the public libraries in our area are SAILS members. Some of the many participating venues include the Basketball Hall of Fame, Battleship Cove, Boston Children's Museum, Boston Science Museum, most area zoos, Salem Witch Museum, Plimoth Patuxet, the New England Patriots Hall of Fame and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Call your local library or visit their website to see the passes available and the requirements for obtaining them. Some passes must reserved in advance.

Middle and high-school-aged kids might like the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The museum has permanent and visiting exhibits.

Older kids might enjoy "Masterpieces of Egyptian Sculpture from the Pyramid Age." There is also a "Mummies" gallery with ancient Egyptian artifacts – and actual mummies.

The museum says, "Dominating the gallery is the massive black stone sarcophagus lid of Kheperra, a general in the 6th century BC."

There are also coffins, carved tomb walls, statues and other wonders.

Each SAILS pass for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts admits two adults and up to four children (7-17) at $10 per person. The pass must be requested on your library's website.

What a great way to pass a cold, wet Saturday afternoon.
