Attleboro Firefighters Rescue Swan Tangled in Fishing Line
ATTLEBORO (WBSM) — It was “knot” your average rescue for the Attleboro Fire Department Wednesday morning, as firefighters saved a swan that had become tangled up in a fishing line.
Firefighters were dispatched at about 8:52 a.m. on September 17 to the area of Leedham Street for a report of an animal in distress.
How the Rescue Unfolded
They arrived at Cranberry Pond and found the swan about 100 feet from the shore with its wings and body caught in a fishing line. Animal Control also responded to the scene to assist. The firefighters put on water rescue suits and waded into the pond and approached the swan.

The swan, however, wanted no part of their help. It resisted their efforts, but the firefighters nonetheless were able to free it. The swan then quickly swam away.
Why Training Matters in Emergencies
"This was a good opportunity for our members to take the training they receive and apply it in the real world in a less time-sensitive situation," Attleboro District Chief Mike Maitland said. "When the day comes that our firefighters need to conduct a water rescue involving a person, they will be better prepared."
