First it was a pandemic, then it was murder hornets, and now it’s a meteor hurtling towards Earth. At this point in 2020, I’m not even surprised.

CNN reports that the celestial object known as 2018VP1 is “projected to come close to Earth on November 2, according to the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.” But how close will it really be?

NASA confirmed that this asteroid is very small and “poses no threat to Earth. Scientists estimate it has only .41 percent chance of entering our atmosphere. If it does, it will disintegrate due to its extremely small size.”

So there is a chance, but no chance of extreme damage. However, this is 2020, and I feel like anything catastrophic that may occur will be this year. And it seems almost appropriate that it would hit the day before Election Day.

It got me thinking: what if an asteroid hits at any moment? What will my legacy be? What will the future population of Earth learn about the human race?

I would hope that the future population would learn about humans’ incredible capability of innovation, from minds like Einstein and Edison. I hope they are able to uncover the perseverance we displayed during depressions and a pandemic.

I also hope some things get erased. No one needs to see my Myspace from 2006 and no future specimen that may inhabit the Earth needs to know about TikTok.

When a freak meteor becomes a valid concern to the world, mortality becomes a little more real, and it reminds us how small we are in comparison to the universe. So, while I am here, I choose to live my life with compassion, humility, and passion.

If a meteor crashes into Earth tomorrow, what would be your legacy?
