Acushnet Family’s Haunted Yard Brings Spooky Tradition to Life at 23 Coury Drive
For over two decades, Mike and Sue Coutinho have transformed their front yard at 23 Coury Drive in Acushnet into a haunting spectacle for Halloween, delighting neighbors and passersby with a spooky yet impressive display.
Mike, now 67 and retired from his role as a correctional officer, has been crafting Halloween magic for 25 to 30 years.
“Before decorations were in stores, I used to make everything myself," he said, "My first Chucky doll was made from a My Buddy doll when my son was seven."
The display has grown over the years, becoming a family affair with his wife Sue, who has a visionary touch for DIY decorations.
Their themed yard, though packed with ghoulish decor, is thoughtfully organized with clowns, pirates, witches, skeletons, animatronics and even fog machines and strobe lights.
Mike's passion for Halloween is driven by memories of his late son, who loved the tradition.
“Now, it has special meaning with Sue and the kids by my side,” he said.
Known for springing surprises on visitors, Mike warns those with epilepsy or heart conditions to be cautious. The lights flick on just before sunset at 5:30 p.m. and stay lit until 9 p.m., creating an eerie setting that draws visitors from far and wide.
From homemade Chucky dolls to larger-than-life witches, Mike and Sue’s haunted yard exposes their lifelong love of Halloween, with their grandkids now part of the tradition in the neighborhood where Mike has spent his entire life, trick-or-treating as well.
So the next time you're in the neighborhood, take a drive over to Coury Street and check out the Coutinhos' masterpiece before it goes away for the season.
