You may not be aware, but the SouthCoast has a long history of strange objects spotted in the sky.

Now, before you go mentioning the New Bedford Regional Airport, Otis Air Force Base and the Logan flight paths, yes, we understand that most reported unidentified flying objects are easily unexplainable. But that doesn’t mean all UFOs can just be explained away.

In fact, I myself spotted something strange in the skies over the Acushnet River many years ago. I was driving home from a ghost hunting event at the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast in Fall River; it was about 3 a.m. on a Sunday. As I was going through the stretch of I-195 eastbound that runs alongside Coggeshall Street, as the Acushnet River came up on my left I happened to look over it and see a strange, bright light hovering over the water, high up in the sky. My first thought was that it was an airplane, despite the very early morning hours. I quickly changed my mind when I saw it blast off in a straight line over Fairhaven – I’d estimate it flew about two miles in the span of a second – then zigged back another few miles over the North End of New Bedford, before zagging back over the River and then far off into the distance, disappearing from sight. The entire duration of my sighting was about five seconds, and there’s nothing I know of that can travel that distance, making those maneuvers, in such a short amount of time.

UFOs, also now known as UAPs (Unexplained Aerial Phenomena), have been around these parts for a long time, and are showing no signs of going away anytime soon.

We compiled some of the most intriguing reports that have been sent into the National UFO Reporting Center over the past few years from sightings on and around the SouthCoast. The center’s director, Peter Davenport, receives the reports from everyday citizens and then posts them on his database; if you ever have a UFO sighting, this is the place to go to report it, along with the Massachusetts chapter of the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON.

In some cases, like this April 11 sighting in Bourne, we had to take into account the fact that, at that time, the Space X Starlink satellites were flying over our part of the world and many reports were coming into the NUFORC thinking it was something strange in the skies. Peter Davenport still posted the reports but made sure to note that they could very well have been Starlink, especially based on the description of a cluster of lights moving together in unison.

Middleboro seems to be the hotspot, but there are also multiple sightings in New Bedford and Fall River. But of course, who could forget Dartmouth’s long history of UFO encounters, especially at Colonel Green's mansion at Round Hill?
