A peculiar sight greeted me in early February as I strolled through Downtown New Bedford: a pair of blue jeans hanging from a tree limb near the octopus intersection at the corner of Route 6 and Pleasant Street.

Fast forward one month and those pants were still in the same spot. Every day, as I made my commute home, those jeans caught my eye. It became a guessing game to see if someone would either claim them or if they'd just fall to the ground.

As the days passed, my tolerance for the sight waned, so on a Thursday afternoon in March, I took action.I armed myself with recording gear and embarked on a very important mission, which I broadcast live on Facebook.

Like I said- someone had to do it.

I was impressed that with all the strong winds and snow New Bedford has been getting lately that those jeans didn't budge from that tiny branch. A nearby orange construction sig had snapped at the base, yet the pants were going stronger than most relationships these days.

Equipped with protective gloves, I carefully removed the jeans, depositing them into a garbage bag before disposing of them in my trash bin. Though tempted by curiosity to explore their contents, the soggy state and pungent odor dissuaded any further investigation. Yet, the thought lingered – could there have been identifying items concealed within the pockets?

Ultimately, the removal of the jeans marks a small victory for cleanliness in New Bedford, even if it was just one thing. Let it be a reminder of the ongoing battle against litter and the responsibility we each hold in preserving our environment, one pair of improperly thrown-out pants at a time.
