It's a topic that is on the minds of many Mattapoisett residents. When will the Mattapoisett Bike Path reopen?

Heck, the curiosity extends beyond Mattapoisett. Anyone who enjoys riding on the bike path is eager to get it back opened again.

The project has been split into two parts:  Mattapoisett Neck Road to Reservation Road and Reservation Road to Depot Street.

"The ultimate goal would be to open the Mattapoisett Neck Road to Reservation Road portion of the bike path sometime in the month of June."  --Jordan Collyer

Jordan Collyer, chair of the Select Board in Mattapoisett, tells us that the Reservation Road to Depot Street portion of the construction project will remain closed. "That's where the affected planking is. There was warping, splitting and cracking because the building material was faulty.  That's being fixed by the general contractor and Mass DOT."

The bad news is that it will be on a bit of a longer timeline, but the good news is that the town is not responsible for any of the financial liability for the repair.

"We did a final walk of the first half," Collyer says.  "We have a punch list with Mass DOT and the general contractor. There are a few things that fall on the town and we know they have to be fully completed before we re-open. The town administrator has met with the neighbors, including the YMCA and Reservation Golf Club. There are a few things we have to fulfill as part of our agreement. We are aware of everything that needs to be done and we're putting together a timeline for completion."

Collyer says the ultimate goal would be to open the Mattapoisett Neck Road to Reservation Road portion of the bike path some time in the month of June.

As far as the second half of the project is concerned (Reservation Road to Depot Street), Collyer says the material is on order, but is tied up because of supply chain issues.

"We're being told that we could have the material by the end of the year, and we're hoping to re-open that part of the bike path by late spring/early summer 2023."
