Westport Couple Chases Sweet Dream of Bakery Business
"When you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life." Confucius said it best and while it may sound cliché, it's the truth for one local couple.
It sounds like the beginning of a joke: "a Marine and a biochemistry supervisor walk into a bakery...." For Westport's Jake and Amanda Brownell, it's their life story and the bakery is their own.
So how does a couple go from the Marines and the medical field to a world of sugar and sweets?

From Serving Our Country to Serving Pastries
"After I got out of the military, I went to school to be a motorcycle mechanic in Florida," Jake Brownell said. "I was kind of living on my own at this point for like the first real time."
What started as a hankering for some cookies, brought Jake back to his childhood, baking sweets and treats with his dad. He would bake on occasion whenever he wanted a snack.
A Business in Baking
Fast forward to the beginning of 2025, he and his wife, a former biochemistry supervisor, decided to act on the positive responses their family and friends had given them and make baking a business.
"My wife and I have always been talking about having a business or something, some sense of community that we can establish with people and it's a way to connect and a way to kind of bring people back together," Jake said.
That's the goal of Brownell's Bakery. They want to bring people together through food and they love doing it.
They spent time working with the Westport health inspector, acquired their residential kitchen license and officially became Brownell's Bakery in March.
