WESTPORT - Several Westport beaches were closed for Labor Day due to a pair of possible shark sightings.

The Boston Globe reports two fishermen reported seeing a large dorsal fin near Gooseberry Island Monday morning. The fishermen reported the sightings separately. One of the men said he saw a fin while he was on Gooseberry Island, with the other saying he saw a fin from the causeway that leads to the island.

Though the sightings could not be confirmed, the reports prompted officials to close Horseneck Beach State Reservation, Baker's Beach, and Cherry and Webb Beach.

It was unclear when the beaches would be reopened to the public. That decision is left to the lifeguards at the beaches.
