WARWICK, RI - The Westport man charged in the stabbing of a female clerk in Warwick, Rhode Island, has been arraigned.

Warwick Police say 41-year-old Jacob Gallant was ordered held on $100,000 bail Monday.

Prosecutors say Gallant stabbed the Rite-Aid employee eight times on Sunday. The woman, who has not been identified, is in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police say Gallant said he was upset about his grandmother's recent passing, which would affect his living situation. Gallant drove to Baltimore, where he attempted to commit suicide in a hotel. Warwick Police Chief Colonel Stephen McCartney says when Gallant woke up the next morning, he was angry, and he drove back to New England. "He decided to stop off at a Wal-Mart store and he bought a butcher knife. And the indication was that he was very angry and that anybody he came in contact with he may do harm to that person," said Chief McCartney.

Police say Gallant stopped at the Warwick Rite-Aid and stabbed the first person he saw.

Gallant is on suicide watch until a re-arraignment on March 20.

Police say Gallant has no prior criminal record and no history of mental illness.
