The CARE shelter on Hathaway Road is under state quarantine after an outbreak of a respiratory virus that has so far killed about a dozen cats.

Another 30 cats at the shelter were infected as of yesterday. New Bedford animal control officer Manny Maciel told a reporter that this is the worst this area has seen. He also said that CARE has handled everything responsibly, and all the cats have been confined.

The quarantine means none of the cats at the shelter can leave, none can can be brought in, and no visitors are allowed.
