MIDDLEBORO — Massachusetts State Police say the victim in Friday afternoon's fatal crash on I-495 in Middleboro was a woman from New Bedford.

Preliminary investigation of the accident indicates that at about 3:40 p.m. on Friday, the 32-year-old New Bedford woman was driving north on 495, just south of Exit 3, when she apparently lost control of her 2004 Ford Explorer and crashed into a tree in the median. The vehicle caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.

Members of the Middleboro Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.

The woman, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation with assistance from the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, and troopers assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

State Police were assisted on scene by Middleboro Fire and EMS, Middleboro Police, and MassDOT.
