Update: Fire Causes Extensive Damage on Spruce Street [VIDEO]
A stubborn fire in a multi-family structure on Spruce Street late Thursday morning kept New Bedford firefighters busy for several hours.
According to District Chief Steven Beaulieu, the alarm for 11 Spruce Street came in just after 11 a.m., and flames could be seen when firefighters arrived.
"We had fires that were extending out through the roofline and through a skylight, and there was fire visible from the second and third-floor units," said Beaulieu.
It took several hours for firefighters to bring the blaze under control, and then more time to douse hot spots in the structure. Beaulieu says it was a difficult fire to extinguish.
"The fire got into the original house and into the gable ends and inside the walls, and there were some spaces in there that seemed like multiple sheeting. We had to keep digging it out and it was tough to get to," he said.
District Chief Beaulieu says a civilian cut his foot while falling from a fire escape and went to the hospital for treatment. No firefighters were injured. Beaulieu described the damage as extensive but said the cause remains under investigation.
