United Way of Greater New Bedford is currently recruiting for 20 AmeriCorps members, 10 full-time and 10 part-time, who will provide a variety of supports for families with children under the age of 18 in the Greater New Bedford area for the New Bedford Strengthening Families Program (NBSF).

The NBSF AmeriCorps program uses the Strengthening Families Protective Factors Framework that centers on five interrelated family protective factors that are known to be associated with child abuse and neglect prevention. These protective factors are:

  1. Knowledge of parenting and child development
  2. Concrete supports in times of need
  3. Social connections
  4. Social and emotional competence of children
  5. Parental resilience.

The Program is looking to hire multiple individuals for two specific positions: Parenting Skills Facilitators and Resource Specialists. Parenting Skills Facilitators are trained to provide Nurturing Parenting Programs that are "designed to help families replace negative patterns with new, positive, nurturing patterns”. Resource Specialists are trained to assist New Bedford parents and caregivers with children under age 18 in accessing concrete supports such as health care and public benefit access, financial literacy, employment, and other referrals to needed services. AmeriCorps will be placed at United Way of Greater New Bedford or other community organizations.
