UPDATE: The victims of the crash have been identified as Thomas Perkins, 68, and his wife Agatha, 66, of Middletown, Rhode Island.

DARTMOUTH (WBSM) — Two people were killed in this morning’s plane crash in Dartmouth.

The plane crashed into the median on Interstate 195 in the area of the Reed Road exit. Portions of I-195 remain closed as the investigation and removal of crash debris continue.

A person on the ground was also injured. They were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. There is no word on their condition at this time.

WPRI reported that flight radar showed “the plane took off from New Bedford Regional Airport at 8:10 a.m., reached about 775 feet altitude about a minute later, and then started dropping shortly after.” The plane was destined for Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell issued a statement this afternoon regarding the crash and the ongoing investigation.

"I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this morning’s tragic plane crash in North Dartmouth,” he said. “The National Transportation Safety Board will be responsible for the investigation to determine the cause of the incident, which officials at the New Bedford Regional Airport are prepared to support.”

“I appreciate the swift and skillful response by New Bedford’s emergency responders, as well as the Massachusetts State Police and other state and municipal officials,” he said. “I am grateful that the crash miraculously did not result in serious injuries to motorists on Interstate 195.”
