Fatal Crash on Route 18 in New Bedford Diverts Traffic

Update 3pm: The victim has been identified as 71-year-old Robert Jorge of New Bedford.

Update 12pm: Route 18 southbound has reopened. Further details on the crash are forthcoming.

NEW BEDFORD — A fatal crash on Route 18 in New Bedford will be diverting traffic until further notice, according to a release from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

MassDOT said that southbound highway traffic will be diverted due to the crash, which took place at Route 18 southbound near Elm Street earlier this morning.

All southbound Route 18 traffic will be detoured at Purchase Street until further notice, according to MassDOT.

No further information has been released.
