Swansea YMCA Makes a Splash With ‘Exciting’ Addition
The YMCA SouthCoast location in Swansea just announced it will break ground on a splash pad in the coming weeks that will be open by summer 2023.
Imagine a YMCA without a pool or a place to keep cool and stay refreshed. That was the case at the Swansea location but not anymore. Since the Y is a non-profit it needed to raise the funds to build the addition and it appears it's close enough to its goal to make the commitment.
It's a go.
Robyn Branco, YMCA SouthCoast's director of mission advancement, has been working on the project since before the pandemic. She said:
"Our goal is to one day soon offer full-scale swimming and safety-around-water programming at the Stoico/FIRSTFED YMCA. As a first step, we have committed to building a splash pad for our children this coming year. Splash pads offer play environments that encourage interaction. A splash pad gives families an exciting place to gather and meet, where parents can socialize and enjoy the outdoors while kids are playing and enjoying the water. The versatility of splash pads with their multiple spray zones appeal to all age groups: it will help generate membership, bring our families together and offer our members and neighbors a place to cool off in the summer months. Additionally, it will offer universal accessibility for all types of physical abilities."
The Y is still looking for community support to raise some money for the project and is submitting for grants to not only get the project fully funded but grow beyond it.
