Stop Smoking, Save Your Heart
If you are smoking, stop. If you are thinking about smoking, don’t start. According to the British Medical Journey, if you just smoke just one cigarette a day, who have a might higher risk of developing coronary heart disease.
Researchers at the UCL Cancer Institute at University College London, according to a Medical Xpress report, looked at the results of 141 studies and estimated the relative risks of smoking one, five or 20 cigarettes per day. Their research says there is no benefits to reducing the amount of smoking and smokers must quit entirely to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Men smoking one cigarette per day had a 46-percent of the excess risk of heart disease and 41-percent of the excess risk of stroke compared to someone who smokes 30 cigarettes a day. The health disease risk for women who smoked one cigarette compared to 20 was 31-percent of excess risk of heart disease and 34-percent of the excess risk of stroke
“No safe level of smoking exists for cardiovascular disease,” said the authors. “Smokers should quit instead of cutting down, using appropriate cessation aids if needed, to significantly reduce their risk of these two common major disorders.
Researchers are hoping their research will help in the public health campaigns against smoking.
